Clinical Experience

Dr. Nirav during his residency period at prestigious Kasturba Medical College & Hospital, Manipal, Karnataka gained knowledge in handling a variety of Pediatric and Neonatal cases. Got the opportunity to lead a team of Residents during the final year, was given the opportunity to decision making in the line of management and of the critical patients under the guidance of expert Pediatric Professors.

As KMC Manipal is one of the best tertiary care referral centers with level III NICU and PICU in south India, during the Residency period got hands-on experience in the management of Extreme preterm neonates and critically ill children.

Academic activity with clinical skills has been always a key characteristic of South Indian Institutions like KMC Manipal. He was used to attending and presenting various topics in Seminars like Clinical Case discussions, Journal clubs, monthly statistical analysis, and mortality assessment.

KMC Manipal infrastructure had 6 PICU beds along with 6 bedded SICU where he managed cases such as Shock, Raised ICP, Acute liver failure, ARF, CCF, Status epilepticus, Status asthmatics, ARDS, Pneumonia, Sepsis, Dengue, DIC, and Febrile neutropenia. In SICU he was managing complicated patients referred from various departments such as pediatric surgery, pediatric orthopedics, pediatric neurosurgery, pediatric spine surgery, ENT surgery, plastic surgery- burns, post-renal transplant, and pediatric ophthalmic surgery.

In the highly equipped NICU and PICU of KMC Manipal he had the opportunity to learn various types of non-invasive ventilation like CPAP, HHHFNC, and BiPAP along with Conventional ventilation and HFO ventilation with Inhaled Nitric Oxide (INO).

He managed chemotherapy patients who were treated under experienced professors like Dr. Pushpa Kini & Dr. Nalini Bhaskarananda. Under their guidance, he had the opportunity to treat patients with pediatric cancer.

He joined National Neonatology Forum Fellowship Programme in 2017, as a Senior Registrar and fellow. During this period, he got the opportunity to look after 18 bedded tertiary level neonatal ICU. He has managed extremely premature babies (weight less than 1000 grams) with RDS, HsPDA, Sepsis, MODS, AOP, IVH, Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia with Exchange transfusion, Complex congenital heart diseases, and various Congenital anomalies of skeletal, neurological, hepatobiliary systems.

He got immense experience to manage the cases like severe MAS, PPHN, Inborn error of metabolism, ARF, Metabolic disorders, Tubular disorder, Shock, Seizures, DSD, Endocrine disorder, Hematological disorders, New and Old BPD, CLD. Also treated the cases like CDH, TEF, Biliary atresia, Intestinal obstruction, Intestinal atresia, ARM, Hirschsprung disease, Hydrocephalus, Airway anomaly, Tracheostomy, Intra-abdominal masses.

He has presented oral and poster papers in various International, National, and State conferences and CMEs.

Dr. Nirav Patel is the youngest director at Orange Neonatal & Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Chandkheda, Ahmedabad. He believes in teamwork, as “Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together”.

He is interested in socializing by helping many NGOs for social causes for underprivileged children. He started gaining experience as a team leader since his old school days which makes him an efficient counselor.

  When he is not on duty, he loves going for long drives, playing piano, writing poems &amp, cycling.
